Engagement Photoshoot Tips – What to Wear, Where and When

An engagement photoshoot is about more than nice pictures. It is about capturing the mood, the chemistry and the story you share. Here are a few simple tips that make the experience better.

1. Plan your outfits with care

Your clothes set much of the mood in the photos.

  • Coordinate colours, but don't match exactly. Think earth tones, soft pastels or warm neutrals.

  • Avoid large logos and busy patterns that draw attention away from you.

  • Dress for the season and the location – wool jumpers and scarves in autumn, light fabrics in summer.

The most important thing is to show your feelings

For her

  • Dresses in soft fabrics like chiffon or linen move beautifully in the wind. A long dress with some swing in the skirt is especially photogenic.

  • Neutral colours such as cream, beige, dusty pink, sage green and light blue work well against natural backgrounds.

  • Layers – a cardigan, denim jacket or scarf – add depth to the outfit.

  • Avoid very short skirts, as they can limit movement and comfort.

For him

  • Light shirts in linen or cotton look relaxed but smart. White, light blue or beige always work.

  • Chinos or suit trousers in earth tones like sand, olive or navy contrast nicely with nature.

  • A simple blazer or jumper on top gives a polished but laid-back look.

For both

  • Choose shoes that suit the setting – boots or loafers in the forest, sneakers in the city, sandals on the beach.

  • Wear clothes you feel comfortable in. If you feel stiff or uncomfortable, it quickly shows in the photos.

2. Choose a location that feels like you

I am a local photographer in Haugesund and always looking for new places for engagement photos. These are locations I have used many times, where we can create personal and creative couple photos:

  • Kvalsvik and the coastal path

  • Ørpetveit farm

  • Ryvarden lighthouse

  • Tuestad

  • Your own favourite forest, beach or city street

  • At home, if that is where you feel most like yourselves

3. Think about the mood, not the poses

The best thing you can do is relax – I will guide you through the rest. If you have ideas you would like to try, just let me know.

4. Timing matters

Light is everything in photography. The golden hours – just after sunrise or before sunset – give warm, flattering light. Midday sun can be harsh and create strong shadows.

5. Bring something personal

Props are not necessary, but they can add personality:

  • A book you love, a picnic basket, a guitar or a cup of hot chocolate in the snow

  • Maybe a four-legged friend?

6. Be rested and comfortable

Make sure you have eaten, slept well and bring warm clothes or an umbrella if needed. It is easier to relax and enjoy yourselves when you feel good.

Remember: it is not about being perfect. It is about showing your love as it is – real, gentle and full of laughter.
